Another Precsion Bass Pickup Thread

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an alder / maple MIM 50's P bass. Presently I am playing it with Fender 7250ML nickel rounds primarily finger style in country, blues, and classic rock environments.

At one point I changed out the pup for a Nordie NP4 and replaced the stock bridge with a Gotoh 201. This seemed to give the bass a nice high mid / treble response but I lost some of the low mid grunt. Missing that punchy thumpy E string response, I went back to the original pickup and bridge. The stock pickup is 10.5K which I believe is the '62 original.

I am looking for a pickup with the lo mid grunt, punch, and thump on the E string and little more clairty and articulation on the high end. The Nordie seemed to lack the low mids (of course the bridge could have been a part of that too). Is the Fralin full of mids with a nice top end. I am hearing this punchy low mid sound with a growly nickel round wound top end. I think I am trying to stay away from any pickup that emphasises highes and lows and detracts from the mids.

Thanks,

Dave

Given no response I will kind of answer my own question for the archives. The more I play with the band with the '62 original and stock bridge, the more I dig it. I played this last weekend at a jam thru a 15" cabient with no tweeter. And I could hear the whole frequency spectrum in the mix just fine. Makes me think I need a new cabinet?

Again, I think you've answered your own question! If you've played through a different cabinet and got the results you were looking for, maybe it's time to invest.

Glad you've found a good sound from your Precision though. It's great when that happens
