Antiquity II for P-bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everyone, I was hoping someone in here would be knowledgeable about these and could describe the sound for me.

I've got a Fender Highway P (flatwounds)with a vintagesque sound but it sounds a little flat sometimes and more importantly get's a little muddy when pushed. I'm a big fan of the vintage P sound and will be using my Bass to record.

I play organic Soul/R&B and Hip hop, a la The Roots, D'angelo, E.Badu, Meshell etc. and am in need of a deep, fat but tight bottom end that is clear enough for me to define the notes being played

I'm looking for vintage P sound with clarity and some ol' school mid growl and can't stand the scratchy, mettalic bass sounds and I don't slap and never will.

I've spent some time reading posts in here and other sites and it seems to me that the Antiquity II and Nordstrand NP4 are best suited for my kind of sound and while the NP4 is described thoroughly (especially in here) i can't find much on the Antiquity II (other than the usual "they sound great" remarks). I live in Denmark and a shop nearby has the Antiquity that's why I haven't gone for the NP4 yet(shipping from US and customs taxes etc. is a hassle).

So if anyone who's heard the Antiquity II could tell me about em or whether they believe they'd suit my needss it would MUCH appreciated.

I just don't want a muddy sound in my bass ever again!

Maybe should talk to SMASH?
IIRC, SMASH liked the Jazz Antiquity II...maybe he has some comments about the P?
He seems like he's tried everything...

Just yesterday, I installed a Norstrand P-pickup in my re-built '64 (the only thing from '64 remaining is the neck).
Anyway, this new pu has more punch, clarity, & responds way better to my 'attack' than the Basslines Quarterpound pickup I had in there.
This Nordstrand pickup doesn't appear to have that nasal thing going on, either(not yet anyway).
It also sounds better slapped/pooped than the Basslines(not that I do any of that with this bass...was just comparing).
