Sign in to disble this ad
ok im looking for any kind of great pickup

i have a musicman sub bass active 2 band

im looking for that flea bass tone

with more bass in it

and a cover on the pickup because i prefer having the pickup closer to the strings

id like to avoid that nasty sound when the strings hit the pickups

i was told bartolini has some good pups

but im not sure if i want to try them yet

anybody got any ideas of what i'm lookin for?

thanks

Bartolini's are okay if you like that muted top end sound. For me, they sound like someone has thrown a cover over the speakers.

Nordstrand do some truly fabulous sounding units, but they have exposes polepieces. You could try Kent Armstrong pickups - they are fantastic extremely punchy with tons of growl (they make the pickups for guys like Ken Smith basses)

Delano? They are just plain super. I have 3 basses that are now Delanoed up. Also in Frankfurt at the Messe I saw some of Reinhard's patents for new pickups coming out and all I can say is WOW! You ain't seen nothin' yet from this company. That said, I do have a Bartolini MM pickup that I can sell you, but that's only because it was replaced by a Delano MM FE model. Hope this helps!

I'm a huge Bart fan (a number of my basses have Barts), but i would agree with kevin that the top end does not "sizzle" with them, so i don't think they'd give you the Flea tone you're looking for.

well yeah cuz i think thats the best way to go

cuz like i prefer

like

a clear sound

and like muted notes on the high end

basically

like this modulus bass in this video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOXMbXPaMJI

thats close to the exact sound i want

but

yeah that idea of a sound is what i'm looking for

and i dont plan on speding more than $200 on one

i mean if its possible

i prefer to spend more like

$100

Well that's sorta the Modulus thing with that muted high end. I can only get that to happen on my modulus, just from the way its set up. I'm not sure that's all pickup either. But if you're looking for "the flea pick up" it is definately the Lane Poor. Good luck finding one for under 200 though, but they sound amazing.

Hey Trip! Reinhard just mentioned have a blast with you at Messa. I can't wait till I can catch a show of yours myself! I'm in the process of swapping all my pickups to Delano as well. I've got the P & MVC4 FE/M2 on order and it looks like I'm going to put a pair of JSBC6 HE in the bridge position of my fretless 6.

He made me some custom jobbies for my Vigier 5 and man! That bass kills now. Glock pre and Delanos? It's just plain nice. Reinhard, Sabine and I did pass a really good time. They are great people, and the things I could tell you when I saw his new patents...All I can say is stay tuned.

Delano

I have to chime in with the "Delano advocates" group, as well.

I also wanted that Flea tone, so I modded my 'Ray (as you can see in the video ) with a graphite neck and a Delano MC4HE. Where this pickup really scores, is in the fact that it has 4 coils (instead of the usual two) and that allowed me to fit a series/parallel/single-coil switch.

The parallel mode sounds most like a the standard 'Ray and is also probably closest to the Flea tone (although not as close as it would be if it were in a Modulus bass). The other two switching positions have their uses too.

Apart from the sound, I think it looks pretty hot too.

(Click on the picture below and turn the sound up. It's not me, or my bass playing, but what the hell? )

I have no idea which model. It would probably be something like the the Bartolini LKJDNVBKDURKEODDD.345.444jj Boptogomator. Their model numbers are quite ridiclulous and impossible to remember AND I'm too lazy to go and see. Delano is fairly difficult to remember as well. Wait, I'll get up and see which one it is and you can PM if you are serious. Delano sounds better IMO, but the Bart does sound nice.

Well I'll be...It doesn't have model number by the grace of God. It's a MM humbucker. Again, PM if you are serious. Love to all!

If Delano really decides to arrive in the US market and those german pups are good as german cars, SD and Bartolini would face serious competition, i guess.

I love my Schecter studio 4 with the EMG HZ pups but I may have to drop bank on the Delano soapbars.
