Bad neck pup out of fairly new geddy?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok im trading this GL to another tb'er and I swapped out my Schecter monster tone pups and put back in the original pups last night. Plugged it in with both pups up full and didnt realize until today that the front neck pup isnt working, I mean no signal at all. I tried connecting to the other pot and still nothing, I then attached new wire from the pup to pot, checked all the grounds, and still nothing? How can you tell when a pup has gone bad? They are basically new and have been sitting in a box for just a few months.
Im going to let the other tb'er know either way, I just want to be sure what the problem is... thanks for any quick help!

the poles still have a magnetic pull to them, can pups go de-magnetize if they are sitting next to each other for any length of time?

check it with an ohm meter at the leads and the solder points.

Thanks I need to get a meter, but does it sound like there is good chance the pup is dead to you? I mean even after changing the wires out on the pup and making sure the connections were solid there was still no output at all..

I doubt the pickup has gone bad... There maybe a broken wire somewhere between the pickup and pots. while it's plugged in try wriggling all the wires to see if the signal cuts in/out. If it does then work on one wire at a time to try and find a break in it. Happened to me about a month ago.

Thanks Stanknuckle, but I did replace the wires already and everything seemed connected, I even connected the pup to the bridge pot, and still nothing? When pups do go bad what causes it??

Similar problem with my GL bridge pup...

On closer inspection, I noticed the wire around the magnets is no longer attached to the contacts.

That being the case, I have no advice on how to fix it... But I plan to have a fiddle and see what I can do, so I'll keep you posted.

There is a good chance you did that too, you should never. ever desolder a wire at the pickup.

If you remove the cover of your pickup, you'll see that the thin wire forming the coil of the pickups is soldered at the same points than the wires going to the pots, when you heat that solder, it's very possible that that little hair-like wire detaches from the solder point.

If you did that and you are extremly lucky, you MAY be able to put it back in place.

Most likely the pickup may be ruined, the wire is cut very short, and is coated with some kind of lacquer, if you try to give some slack, by unwrapping it, it will snap, if it snaps, it's over.

Try your best but me and many Tber's scrapped some pickups by doing that.

Now were getting somewhere! I think that is what happened? The wire that makes up the coil on these pups is very loose all the way around, I believe it could be unraveled a bit and resoldered... Ive got a new pup on the way but I want to give this a shot to see if it works. thanks again guys.

Ok that was it, such an easy fix! just soldered the wire back onto the same spot and bamm its working again, never even say that wire it was so small... thanks for saving me the $60 for a new pup guys!!!!
