Bartolini 8s Who's on top?

Sign in to disble this ad
I think this is borderline stupid question but physics is just not me.

Just in the process of throwing a Bart 8s into a Mustang body - (I know, I know) Don't have the old pups so I have nothing to copy either.

Essentially, the two pieces are one staggered pickup?? The E+A closer to the neck to be warmer??..D+G closer to bridge - more treble. Makes sense?? But are both pieces wound the same? Like does the one marked N (assuming north) have to take a specific position ie neck or bridge.

Can't really get my head around it. I have a rich history of making an easy job seem hard.

Please heeeelp.......and Thank you to those who know

Both coils (pieces) are wound the same, so it doesn't matter which is in which position, but the one with the output wire usually goes in the G-D string position to make a shorter connection to the controls. I suspect the "N" marking is to indicate magnetic polarity, which might be a consideration if you were going to combine it with another pickup, but not if you're using it alone.

While building one of my DIYs I found I prefer the tone of pickup halves reversed with the D/G half placed on the neck side of the E/A half (which itself is about a half inch closer to the neck instead of in it's normal position).

The north magnetic polarity is only relevant if you're trying to "mate" it with another pickup half - once you wire the P-pickup as a whole made of two halves (i.e. once its output leads are soldered onwards), there's no further effect on combining it with another pickup.
