| Bartolini HR-4.6 into Schecter Riot-5

Hey, I just ordered a Schecter Riot-5 bass in Brown Sunburst and the stock preamp is only 2 band, so I wanted to swap out with a Bartolini system. Since it only has 4 knobs stock, I figured the HR-4.6 would be the best way to go. Now never having done any sort of upgrade to a bass before (in fact being a relatively novice bassist!) I have a few noobie questions:
1. Can I do this mod without physically modifying the instrument? I live in NYC, so if I had to do any woodwork to the bass, I would take it to a professional luthier / repair shop here, but that would take a lot longer and add significantly to the total cost of the modded bass. Right now I'm looking at it as a $750 instrument that will hopefully sound like a $2750 one.
2. Are there any stock off the shelf basses with EMG HZ pups and a Bartolini preamp so I could hear how that combination will sound ahead of time?
3. Assuming I have some very basic soldering skills, how hard would it be to do this myself? I mean if it's not something recommended for a beginner, I could take it to a luthier, I think there are a couple good ones in NYC, but then that's money that will take away from me getting a really nice amp/cab/mono bag/RC-30 loop station/Behringer V-Amp Pro!
4. I'm also *thinking* of replacing the EMG pickups with Bartolini M45M Split Coils, since no one here seems to think the EMG Hz's sound good. Same deal ... thoughts on sound, difficulty of install? I'm hoping these would be a direct fit in the EMG routing?
