Bartolini Imbalance?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just replaced the bridge pickup in my Yamaha bb404 with a Bartolini 9J#1. The stock bridge pup was thinner sounding than I wanted, and I liked Bart’s description “These are wound to yield more "growl" from the bridge pickup”.
I wired it according to the standard jazz wiring on the Seymour Duncan website.
When soloed, both pickups sound fine, but they just won’t blend to anything useable – weak/thin/hollow – in different varieties of uselessness according to the pup volume blend. They tend to cancel each other out more than blend.
Should I assume this is caused by the inherent differences (output, resistance, etc.) in the stock single-coil neck pu and the Bart?, therefore making this combination non-useable.
Or is something else going wrong? Any ideas?

Sounds like it's out of phase. Reverse the wires on one of the pickups.

They are definitely out of phase with one another. As A9X said, reverse the wires on one pickup. But make sure you don't change the shield wire... keep that on ground.
