bartolini jazz pickups: deep tone or bright tone?

i am interested in bartolini pickups for a fretless jazz project. i really dig the sound that juan alderete gets on the mars volta and big sir albums, and im aware he employs a bartolini jazz pickup in his fretless p.

anyway, my question is what is the difference between bartolini's deep tone or bright tone. i havent been able to find a description and im finding this one rather vague. id like a bright tone, but i dont want to sacrifice lows. i suppose you may be able to see my confusion.

Does Alderete use effects? Those can radically change the tone to the extent that the pickups are not much of a factor.
