Bartolini Thunderbird CB pickups?

Sign in to disble this ad
Do they give an authentic Thunderbird tone? Growl, and depth, with some brightness on the bridge pickup?

More importantly, are they good sounding in general?

I know tone is subjective, but I just want a general idea of how they're percieved.

Also, not retrofitting a Thunderbird, they'd go in a homebuild, P neck, with a rosewood board, and a mahogany body.

So after searching, and researching(Barts site is useless), I found no answer.

Some say they sound dull,
Some say they sound bright,
Some say noisy,
Some say quiet,
Some say nothing like T-Birds,
Some say better than Gibsons........

There are so many different kinds out there, as well as many that are special wound for a particular bass builder or player (they seem to be the most praised). My experience with them is that they are smooth, with good low end but not too much punch - top end is ok. Overall they are good or there would not have been so many sold in my opinion. I have used j replacements and bc soapbars. I like them, but they are not for all types of music in my opinion. I am replacing my bart soapbars in my warmoth jazz with nordstrand bigsplits - we will see how that goes. And, in the end you are right, tone is subjective.

Thanks for the input man, but I specifically mean the Thunderbird model, T4CBC.

I have a set of the Roscoe Barts I really like, but I'm under the belief that they are very different from standard Bart style.

You can occasionally find Gibson TB Plus pickups on eBay. And Mike Lull makes reproductions of the '60s era Thunderbird pickups.

I can't bid on eBay, only BIN, as I don't actually have a CC, and have to borrow one to do the buying.

As for the Lull's, they're 400 bucks, before shipping and import.
I wish I could get them!

Plus I'm making the body this week, Monday hopefully.

I was hoping the Bart's were good, as I have a case of T-Bird GAS, but if not I'll have to pick something reliable out.

It seems that the general consensus from past reading of this and other forums is that the Barts don't sound like Thunderbird pickups. That doesn't mean that they don't sound good though.

You can go to the Gibson forum at the Bass Outpost and ask, there are people there that know pretty much everything there is to know about Thunderbirds.

I could have sworn I saw a recent T-Bird with the Barts installed from the factory.

How odd, was it a signature model, by chance?

I didn't play it, so I really can't comment on the tone. Last time I was in that shop, I think it had sold.
