I have a Squier P with '62 Fender pups and the Wilde P/J in a custom made Jazz. The Wilde P have more gain than the Fender and sounds more "open" (I guess the Wilde pickups have more mid highs/highs) and less "muddy" than Fender P pups.
The Wilde J sounds close to a Fender J, but again, with a bit more output and definition ("punch"?)
Both Wilde P and J full on make a great slap tone combo!
There are some reviews of the P-46 Wilde pickups in this thread: Bill Lawrence P-46 Pickup mini review (BEST P Pickup I've EVER tried)!

It's just about as hot as a stock Fender P pickup, but it has a nice, warm low end with bright, but not shrill highs. And a J to match it? Well, the first place I'd look is a SD Quarter Pounder J. From what I've heard, it's a slightly more throaty version of a Jazz pickup, which may complement the DP127 quite nicely.

| | | | I´m looking for a PJ set with much growl - what do think about a Fralin set with -5% P and stock Split Jazz?
At the moment I use Delano PMVC 4 FE and they sound very good but I want a little more upper mids and do not want to work much with the eq (I go with a droptuned B-String) |

| | The Man is in the window | | Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Manassas, VA | | | I've been asking the same question for months myself because I've been wanting wanting to switch out the EMG's on my Fodera Monarch. I was really looking at the Bill Lawrence pickups, but I was a little turned off by a couple of things. Some people said the P pickup was a tight fit and my bass has a figured top and no pickguard. Also, I don't know when I would get the pickups and I need a flat radius for the bridge, since the fretboard has a pretty flat radius. I'm sure they are awesome pickups and I definitely want to buy a pair for future use. The price is fantastic and Bill Lawrence is the man.
I decided on a D.Allen for the P pickups. I really liked the samples and I think the extended low end will work out well with my Pope preamp and the rig I play through. I got a Lindy Fralin split jazz wound 5% over for the bridge. Both pickups are wound to about the same value, so I should be able to avoid buzz as well as the volume disparity often found with the PJ setup. Best Bass Gear has the Fralin pickup for $50 off right now. They told me it would be 2 months before I got it, but I received it about 10 days after ordering.
I'm getting them installed next week. I'll report back after I spend some time with them.
Michael

I've used a similar PJ combo with SD vintage P (SPB-1) and SD Hot Stack J (STK-J2). 2 500k volume pots and 1 Fender TBX tone control give versatility and great tone.
I previously used a SD Hot P (SPB-2) in the PJ, but feel the SPB-1 makes a better combo for me.
I'd also consider a Fender 62 P and Fender Super 55 J combo if I were to build or mod another PJ. |

| | | | Replacement pickups for Fender Hot Rod Precision. Hello fellow bassists. Growler571 here. I am wondering what would be the best PJ pickup replacement to get for my Fender Hot Rod Precision Bass, I would like get the same type tone as Duff Mckagan gets with GnR. But I also need it to get that standard warm vintage P tone when the neck pickup is soloed. Any thoughts recomendations. |

One was an ultra-punchy, almost a midrange "thunk" on Appetite, and then there was the bright, slice your head off tone from then Use your Illusion albums.
