| | | | pbass pickup. im a drummer really, but ive always loved to play bass, and iom a p bass guy i suppose. Ive tried quite a few and owned some. I have to say that the red roadword p ive got sounds exeptionally nice. The "most" archtypical pbass sound ive heard.
i have another mexican that sounds nice too and its got an antiquity 2 in it. Its nice in a differnt way. The roadworn is so fat, warm, mellow, and sweet. Ive put on an ashtray and pickupguard. |

I put on a set of Fender flatwounds, and I am very happy with the warm, full, lows, with some sizzle when I dig in. |

I've tried Antiquities, Nordstrands, Lollars, DiMarzios, Fralins, EMG's, Fenders, Lawrence, etc...and the SPB-1's were the closest IMO. (with the Fender OV62's coming very close as well)
The others were nice pickups and would be great for various uses and needs though.... | I took my 1965 P with Spb-1s to Sam Ash and had a little shoot out with all their (Larry Hartke's) pre cbs fenders... It was awesome. The SPBs were spot on with at least the 5 other Ps I compared it to. I really couldn't tell a difference (neither could Larry or the other employees), and my pickup search is over...
Larrys a cool dude btw... I highly recommend stopping by and checking out his bass collection if your ever in the hood... |

The other candidate we discussed was the Fender '62 RI which has just a tad more high end. Ironically, the RI is not as historically accurate as the Duncan. The pole pieces on the RI have rounded edges, the originals do not.
