Yeah, I am using flats and with the tone rolled off and it sounds great; what I am talking about is the range of tone limited by the capacitor. I would like some input from folks on what capacitors they found best fit the P46. Bill suggests the o.1mf.

Me 2. Mine are bright but I can back the tone off.

I'm using an orange drop 0.1mf cap...it's physically large... and the 250 ohm pot. I play D'Addario nickel rounds 45 - 105. Tonal range seems the same as my other basses. At the extreme ends of the range I either get some sizzle or more of a muted tone. I find the range to be well suited to my tastes. Playing mostly blues and rock from all eras. I play through an Aquilar TH350 which gives me some grind to the tone. Very pleased.

As a Christmas present to my self, I wanted to upgrade my bases. Based on this thread, I ordered two sets of pickups. One P-46 set for the P-bass and one J-45 set for my J-bass. They came in yesterday. I will report later.

Just wanted to add my .02. I ended up going with the Lawrence P-46. I am very satisfied. It's full and deep, but without losing the essential character of a split P-bass PU. Dead quiet too. Also, about 1/2 the price of other boutique PUs. This is my second extremely positive experience with Bill Lawrence/Wilde.

I also upgraded the harness with one of these:

The Tone control is MUCH more usable.

Tell me more about the updgrade to the wiring harness. I've seen these out there but did not know if they were worth it.

Yeah, well I had the cheapo MIM standard pots and such in the harness. I wanted smoother pots and figured I'd pop for a premium paper-in-oil cap while I was at it.

Well worth the $$$. I don't use Tone controls much at all, except with this particular bass. The difference is dramatic. The Tone control doesn't mud out like it did with the MIM cap. I say do it and don't look back.

$40 for a wired harness with premium components is only a few bucks more than what the parts cost. Honestly, I don't see how they make any $$$.

Thanks for the info. I am building a P-bass trying to go with a vintage vibe to it. Warmoth neck on a body I picked up somewhere along the way. Anyway, I didn't want to go cheap on the internals and wanted something different so I ordered a P46 from Bill Lawrence. I tend to use my tone control a lot and when I saw your post about the Vintage Relic harness and thought I should check it out. Thanks again!

Being a novice soldering person, I just installed the P-46 into a nice made in japan precision i got from japan. Appears I overheated the vol pot and ruined it. So, after searching for replacements, I found this recommendation for the wiring harness. Just bought it on ebay. Thx for the tip, tonemonkey. !!

Now if I could understand why Bill recommends such a higher value cap in there. Think I'll stay with the factory standard value. Anyone directly compare the two?

Would anyone describe these pickups as not extended at both ends and polite?

Definitely not extended past what sounds right to me, with great warmth and character. Don't think I would call them "polite" exactly.

I would not. Very dynamic in my opinion provided the bass is set up correctly.

I just ordered my first set of Bill's pickups for my Warmoth PJ bass. I have SD QP's in there now. While the QP's are good, they're just a bit "too much" of everything for my taste. I've read a lot of good things about Bill's pickups, so I'm really looking forward to receiving them!

Well what's the comparison? give us a Verdict. I would like to hear reviews. Do you think these will have a boutique status?

I haven't installed them yet. Right before I received the pickups, I decided that my bass should be Lake Placid blue rather than Fiesta red. Just sprayed my first coat of clear over the blue last night, so I'll report back once it get it all back together.

I just put a set in a American 2009 p bass. Lots more fundamental, no hum or hiss and much better string to string balance. I think these are the best for the money and you would be splitting hairs finding better. and if the pickups cost 150 i guess then they would have boutique status.
