boost-only preamp...center detent pots?

I got my eye on a boost-only preamp that has 4 pots (standard vol, blend, treb, bass) and I'd want to use a stacked treb/bass pot so I can only use 3 holes. The only stacked pot I see on the market is a 50k/50k from Allparts, and it has center detents (concentric...I guess that having a common center means detents?). Can I use this pot in a boost-only situation?

That should be fine. The center detent might make a handy reference too, ie "for this song I EQ flat, but for the next I want 50% boost on the bass knob" ... could be a timesaver.

A detent is a mechanical feature of the pot, and has no effect on the taper or electronic function of the pot.
You can use a pot with a center detent if you want, you will just have a useless detent to mark 50%.

Something worth noting however, I found out that the Aguilar OBP-1 was designed to work with an audio taper rather than linear.
I thought that it was odd as hell at first for an EQ, but then I started thinking about how difficult linear taper 25K pots are to come by.
It may be possible that your preamp is designed to use audio taper pots as well. Linear tapers may work better, or they may give you an uneven boost.

i plan to use center detent pots for the 2 band boost-only i just plucked off fleabay. i think it'd be convenient to have the center detent as a 50/50 marker...

Concentric doesn't have anything to do with detents. It just means that the pots have a common center, as you surmised. You can get stacked pots with or without detents. My J-Retro has both types on one bass.

pots

Anyone tried using pots with different values with and active preamp? For example using 100k pots on an Aggie preamp that should have 50k pots? I'm having a tough time finding a 100k stack pot for a couple of pre's I have and was wondering if I used a 50k stack pot instead what would happen. I have not been able to get an answer other than "try it and see what happens". I'm sure it will work but I'm very interested in how it may change the sound and why. I have a Marleaux with a 2 band pre and the stackpot is shot. It solders directly to the PCB but it is a large lug design. I can't find one anywhere. They have since changed their design and sent me a mini 100k stackpot with pins. I remote wired it to the PCB and it works fine but it's a mess of wires in a very small compartment. I also just got a bass that has an Alleva Coppollo 2 band that uses 100k pots. I want to install a concentric so I can add a passive tone. Any help/ideas/experience with this would be greatly appreciated.

thanx
