Buzzing humbucker?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm playing a Douglas WOB-826 as of late, sounds good, plays good, but the way the bass buzzes is dumbfounding. The bass buzzes in certain rooms, indicating interference, and I've swapped cables and tried a couple different amps that don't otherwise buzz, and I've determined it's somewhere in the bass. I generally expected that, however, given the price. What's really dumbfounding me is that the bridge pickup puts out a very nasty buzz when exposed to interference as compared to the neck pickup. I turn the blend to all the way to the neck, and there's no buzzing beyond what seems to be a grounding issue, then when I turn to the bridge pickup (in a room with interference), the pickup screams very loudly, which is a big problem for home recordings given I use that pickup quite a bit.

I've brought it to two techs, but one didn't have a clue how to approach it, and the other basically laughed at me when I "expected" him to fix a sub $200 bass, which was frustrating, so I'm going about this on my own. Would it simply be a faulty pickup in the bridge position causing it to take in interference, or could it be something else? I am planning on swapping the pickups and preamp in the future, given the bass plays well enough otherwise, so should I just leave it as is until I go that route?

Thanks for any input.

One of the coils in the pup could be dud - both coils need to output roughly the same signal amplitude for the humbucking to work effectively.

Looks like a pickup swap is in store. EMG-40P's are the closest thing that will fit in the original pickup holes without leaving much of a gap, so it'll be a complete 'rod of the electrics which should serve the bass well.

I have the same bass, and my bridge pup does hum a bit, but nothing like what you describe:
"the pickup screams very loudly"
and yes I agree that the EMG 40's will fit. I've done measurements a couple weeks ago myself...
