buzzing sound

Sign in to disble this ad
a few months ago, i bought my first bass. it was cheap and used and would cut in and out. I came on here, found some diagrams, rewired it, installed new parts...and now i have a buzzing sound thru my amp. If i touch the end on the cable or the part where the cable goes in, it goes away completely.also i did notice too that when you adjust the two knobs, they crackle and pop. are these two issues related and what should i do to fix this buzzing sound?

It sounds like you have some wiring issues. Go back and double check your soldering work against the wiring diagram. Pay special attention to ground wires and make sure none of the components are shorting out against something metal when you put the bass back together (this includes the output jack).

If you can't isolate the problem, come back and let us know the type of bass you have, the type of pickups & controls, and the wiring diagram you are using. Posting clear pictures of everything is very helpful too.

well i went thru the wiring again and i added a ground from the volume pot casing to the tone casing. now i have no sound. i cut the ground wire between the casings and the buzz came back and i still have no sound. i redid some of the wiring, which this thing looks like a nightmare now...i've been looking online at schematics but no two are the same from what i see. i'm wondering if i should just start fresh and take all the wiring off and redo it again.

well ifinally figured out the problem this morning. i went and bought new pots, and a.1uF cap, wired it up, had sound fo about 10 seconds. took it back apart, starred at it for about an hour.. so i figured it out... i ran a ground wire from 1 pot to the other and i had the wires going to the audio jack connector backwards. now.. i have NO hum sound, and its SOOOO much better. my pots actually work now, first time ever.
