Bypassing volume pot?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys,

The volume pot on my P-Bass is shot, and I no longer get any output. I know for a fact this is the problem, so I just need to know how to temporarily bypass it so I can get a signal to my amp.

I will be getting a wiring kit soon, so I'll do it up right later.

If someone could either give me instructions, a diagram, or a link on how to do this, I would really appreciate it. Basically, my bass is dead right now, and I want to do a little meatball surgery til I can fix it proper.

Thanks!

Straight to the jack or do you want the tone pot too?

Straight to the jack would involve moving the wire from the pickup to the back of the volume pot to the sleeve of the jack and the wire from the pickup to the leg of the pot to the tip of the jack.

This is how I would do it temporarilly.

Update!

I went to fry's yesterday, and picked up some wire, soldering iron, solder and a 500K pot. (500k was the closest they had. the others were 10k, 5k, 1k)

I clipped the wires on the old pot, and soldered in the new 500K pot.

It works! But, the volume is weird. It can't be turned all the way down (off). And it almost seems to have more gain.

At any rate, it works, and will be good temporarily until I get my new wiring kit. The cool thing is that the pot was only 2 bucks!

I'll post pics and an update when I re-do the wiring the right way!
