Cable causing buzz?

I recently bought a new cable as my old one wasn't long enough. Whenever I plug the new cable in to my bass and amp there is aloud buzzing sound that gets quieter when I touch the strings or bridge. When I use my old cable the buzzing sound is much less. The new cable is a Peavey and the Bass is an Ibanez SR300

Are sure that the cable you bought is an instrument cable and not a speaker cable?
