Cable decision: Planet waves, Canare, or Elixir?

Sign in to disble this ad
Going to buy a new cable with a right angle plug. I've narrowed down to these three. Whats the consensus? The Canare I'm looking at has the Neutrik XB gold plated ends. Other suggestions are welcome..

Thanks!

I recently was sent the Elixir bass cable. It was way too "Hi-Fi" for me. It boosted the highs and lost the warmth on the low-mids.

Canare, Mogami, Monster, Planet Waves and Fender all have nice cables....

The folks I've asked about the Elixir cables all recommend trying others. I'm a big fan of Fulltone cables, although some of those same folks have mentioned that they're seeing a recent rash of failures.

I also like Planet Waves, but have discovered that their ends are a bit fat for some recessed jacks.

I use Planet Waves because they sound good, are very durable, and because they have a mute switch. You really can`t beat them.

I like my Planet Waves cable with the mute switch, except when they curl up on me

Canare rules! Buy some and pick up with some G&H plugs and solder it up yourself. You'll never play a better cable. Probably wont ever need to replace it if you take decent care of it either.

Thanks All!

Looks like I'm leaning towards the canare. Any other suggestions?

Now this is something I didn't know - cables affect your signal? Wow.

After reading this I was going to recommend Planet Wave cables since that's what I've been using - but after LowBSix's comment I don't know...

There is no normal cable made that 'boosts' anything. If the lows get eaten or lost--which I've never experienced, personally--there is something terribly wrong with the cable. Buy the Live Wires at GC. They're guaranteed for life and work just fine.

i've used the planet waves patch cables for about 5 years the same ones (under very non stress in door use) and owned a normal cable and its been the best... never tried the canary cable mentioned.

I would have totally agreed with you until receiving one of these Elixir cables. The highs are drastically more audible than with my Canare cables, when using a passive bass. And though this is way unscientific, watching the signal on VU meters, it appears to be overall louder as well--meaning the lows and mids are not reduced (which would give the impression of increased highs).

I prefer the Canare cables with their flat (seeming), unhyped frequency response; but the Elixir would be great for a passive bass player who wanted more bright, cutting tone--it actually delivers.

I've seen it on a scope and can hear the difference. 2 friend/tone geek/guitards were able to go through a multitude of "high end" cables, because one is an executive at GC corporate, about 7 miles from my home. The other guy works on The Jay Leno show... They took all of the cables, with the same instrument and amplifier and were blown away.

They each came away stating that the "Studio Pro" cable by Monster was the best sounding guitar cable.

When I plugged the Elixir cable into my rig, all MESA with my LEJ, I found the high end to be annoying, so I changed over to the bass cable I received from Fender on the factory tour. I prefer the Fender over Monster, Mogami and Elixir... I have all three and there's a difference.

Perhaps, if you're not able to hear the difference, the rig may not reproduce the sound of the instrument and is possibly EQ'd too much...

Remember; this is IMHO...

Planet waves... after a lot of trying, these came out to be the most awesome cables in turn of sound and durability

Which Canare cable do you all use, is it the GS6?

Has anyone tried Klotz La Grange for passive bass?

You may wish to look around online and be sure to visit the 'Lava cable' site for a glance into the many different cables that are offered there. There are also some links at the bottom of the homepage you may wish to view. Thier offerings are first rate.

Thanks for all the replies folks!
I ended up with the Planet Waves Custom-Pro. I was able to find one for 25 bucks. GC is selling them for $49

Happy new year!!!
