Calling Jauqo III-X:Enfield "super 8" pup

Sign in to disble this ad
I made a post about this a while ago. But,got no bites.

Jauqo III-X,this question is mainly aimed at you. Due to the fact that I recently seen you playing around on one of the Enfield Basses with the "Super 8 "pup on video (NAMM 2010).
How does the pup sound? As I'm sure you know that they're claim is that you can get J-Bass,P-Bass,MM,etc. configurations with that one "manly, beastly, big hunk 'o' magnet".

So,what's your take on the pup? Does it stand up to their claims?
If anyone else has played an Enfield, feel free to chime in too.

In the clip that you mentioned,it was not the first time that I have spent some time with an Enfield bass. Aside from the quality and extreme attention to detail the electronics really do deliver in a huge way. They're claim is dead on accurate, no exaggeration at all.

Overall the bass had many great sounds coming out of it and no matter what pickup configuration one tries your ears will definitely let you know just how on point the sound is.

Experience with many different sounding pickups and pickup combination's will really be helpful in determining just how versatile and accurate the system is.

Martin knows what he has and the system is only available for use in the Enfield basses.

I don't know if you've seen the link below but it gives one an idea just how versatile the system really is.

Again the claim is not exaggerated at all.

...that is a real serious pickup. I'd be tempted to get one, except for the single drawback of not being able to swap out pups - strikes me that there aren't a lot of replacements with that size/shape.

...oh, and I'm not a fan of actives - that too. Seems to me that the switching scheme would be difficult without active electronics.

However, don't some of the newer MM-style pups have a similar arrangement - i.e., multiple selectable coils in a single housing?

In case it's a octo-coil pickup (which its switching mode would certainly suggest), it wouldn't necessarily be an active configuration - you just have to have pickup leads in the right places.

For instance:

This is a schematic I used to explain one of my future pickup projects to a fellow TBer (tubby.twins) exactly what I wish to accomplish once I start winding - a switchable neckJ-P-MM-reverseP-bridgeJ configuration - and with tactically placed pickup leads you can wire it up to a switch.

Granted, for a single pickup like this you will need a fairly decently sized switch, at least a four-pole five-position rotary or a more complex arrangement with two on-on-on switches. So the Enfield pickup seems like two of the above schematics glued together.

Of course, that doesn't quite explain how it's wound up on the inside - I'm suspecting it's nothing as simple.

Thats where the real neat trick is, each coil selection mode, is evened in volume, so when you flick from P to J, to MM, the volume dosen't change, just the tone, and the John East preamp on top of it all/with full passive mode including tone control.... studio war machine.
