| can anyone compare a J PU to a single coil P PU?

I had a single coil P bass a long time ago, and, outside of the hum issues, I loved the sound of it. I have a 5 string J bass and am thinking of replacing the front PU with a single coil- if I can find one.
Would anyone care to offer their entirely subjective comparison of the sound of the two pick ups? Are the two PUs in the same place on the body?
And maybe help me find somebody who can make that sound in a 5 string J bass config?
