Question Can Dimarzio Model J's = Thunderbird tone?

Sign in to disble this ad
So at the local GC a couple months back I was checking around for a practice amp, and the closest thing to test how my T-40 would sound through it was an epiphone thunderbird. I've seen a lot of dislike for the modern t-bird and that they dont sound anything like the old-school ones, but I really dug the thick punchy tone.

I have too many basses as it is and I'd rather not sell one, but I have a bass with a dimarzio J in the neck, and was wondering if I got one for the bridge, would I be able to get a similar tone to the Epibird? I noticed the pickup placement is rather similar, and the model J I have is quite the aggressive humbucker pickup, so has anyone compared the two?

I don't think so actually... I'm not a T-bird expert, I think they have humbucker pickups. They also usually are made of different woods than jazz basses.

Maybe if you had a series wiring option, you would get a little closer.

I'm not to sure what a Thunderbird sounds like. But Model J's aren't as meaty as Gibson basses tend to be. I have some on my MIM jazz.

Model J's are split-coil humbuckers, very similar to the Dimarzio model-P except in a Jazz pickup enclosure.

The neck pickup I have I installed with a series-parallel switch, I mainly use it in series and its a pretty massive sounding humbucker, which is why I thought with one in the bridge as well I might be able to cop an epibird tone due to the similar pickup placement. I would be wiring the bridge pickup as series only.

You'll definitely get a louder signal and no hum, that's closer than you would be otherwise.

Guess I'll just do it and hope it sounds as massive as i would think, with the set at $95 I should be able to get a bridge pickup for 50ish bucks and throw it in there, all else fails I suppose I could use it in another build.
