Can i add a push-pull knob on my J bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I have an American Jazz '75 vintage reissue and as the title says i want to add a push pull knob on it.
I want it to work like a slap switch-scooping the mids only that it will be adjustable cause it's a knob-and also i want it to be double(one knob below and one knob above-i've seen that somewere).
Im thinking of replacing the bridge pickup volume with this "double" knob.
The knob below will be the pickup volume and the push pull knob above will be the slap tone..
First of all, is all this possible or am i talking cr*p? :S :P
Will this require active pickups or can it work with passive?

Sorry but im a total noob with the electronic parts and patents of the bass.
Show mercy.

You are talking about a push/pull, dual concentric pot? I don't think they make those. Also, you cannot just make a knob do something like a mid scoop. There are things like varitone switches and stuff but it will not give you an adjustable "slap tone" control like you are looking for. Your best bet would be adding a preamp with the features you need.

Unfortunately, you might indeed be talking cr*p. To have a mid scoop you would need a preamp of some sort. Passive electronics simply will not allow you to do that.

If you don't want to add a preamp, just use your tone knob. Roll it up for slap to get some of that top end. Nothing is worse than that thin, gutless mid scoop slap tone anyways Except maybe for mid scoop fingerstyle tone..

You can get dual concentric, push/pull pots, I believe MEC makes them, and I know they come in some John East Preamps.

Interesting. Never seen those. MEC makes all kinds of weird stuff. I will have to check them out.

MEC will charge you $80 or so, but they do make concentric push/pull pots.
I think this is one of them on the homepage:

As far as a mid scoop, these exist as well, although I'm not 100% sure about how it works. In theory, it shouldn't be too terribly difficult to isolate the mid frequencies of your choice and have them controlled by a DPDT cut/bypass switch.

Isn't this what the S1 switch is for on Jazz Basses?

That's just a series/parallel switch for the pups. IIRC

Yup, which causes a mid boost.
