Can I "inject" a J p'up into a P bass circuit (wiring question)

Sign in to disble this ad
Any time I have ever had a P/J setup, I've always used the P almost exclusively. I'm sure this won't be any different, but I got a good deal on the body and it was already routed, so here we go.

I want to just wire the J pup independent from the P bass circuit. that way I can control the volume and tone of the P, or roll it completely out if I should ever want to use the J alone (which I probably never will). Anytime I ever have used a J bridge pup it's been all dimed to even hear it when mixed with a P so I don't need more pots in the circuit, and I want to be able to shut it completely off as to not add any more load to my P bass p'up.

So - can I wire a regular P bass circuit, and then wire a J through an on/off mini toggle direct to the same jack? Sorry my diagram stinks, but at least you get an idea of what I'm thinking (I hope). If this diagram wouldn't work, is there any way I can achieve the same goal.

Edit - the P bass diagram doesn't stink, just my additions. I meant no disrespect to the original artist.

You will need to use the volume pot's wiper terminal as an input rather than an output. The way you have it will short the output when the P's volume is rolled all the way down, preventing you from soloing the J.

SO If I understand you, then I need to reverse the 2 terminals on the volume pot for the P bass, correct? make the center one the input and the outer left the out, leaving the ground as is

Edit - actually looking at the diagram the way I just stated would still short out the output when the pot was down, right? so where would the input of the P bass pup need to go into the volume pot?

Yes. And leave the tone pot's connection as it is.

Ok - so basically I am just moving the input of the pup to the center lug and the output to the jack to the outside left. Every thing else stays the same. Easy enough
