can i pick your brain? j bass pickup questions

Sign in to disble this ad
just got a new MIA jazz with the S1 switch. it feels sooooo good. but coming from my 73 p bass with a lindy fralin pickup, im missing the beef a little. i have 2 questions-

first question- what pickups would you recommend as a replacement to the stock pickups? here's what id like - more solid bottom end but not into mud territory (which is something i love about the fralin and the P ive got), less twang but still plenty of note definition thru a mix. maybe less noise too, the stock pickups are pretty noisy when solo'd

second question- is there a j sized pickup that sounds like a P?
this isnt my first jazz bass (it's my 4th), i like the jazz sound but i gotta say i love using the series wiring. but that might only be due to the lack of heavy bottom on the stock J pickups. when i pick up the P again though, it's always oh yeahhhh that's what im missing haha. i got the jazz mostly for the feel and cuz i wanted something that'd cut thru a mix a -little- more

ps im using la bella flats at the moment (might switch to TI's though, i might prefer them). when i use rounds it's hard rockin steels

any help is sooooooooooooo appreciated!

First off...you could get a PJ...I love PJ's best of both worlds IMO...

it's hard to duplicate "that" P-pickup sound...however, you can get fatter sounding J-pickups...but then you begin to lose that sound that makes
Jazzes so appealing.

I think a lot of what you're longing for is that "sound in your head" that your '73 P has planted.

If your Jazz has a pickguard, you may seriously consider getting a custom PG made and routing the bass for another Fralin P-pickup in the neck...
keep the series option wired in, however, it's great even on a PJ...(I know)...

if you use push-on connectors for the pickups...you can make your Jazz so that you can basically convert it from a JJ to a PJ in about 20 minutes...simply by popping in the other pickup and changing the pickguards...

my 73 is a routed PJ, it is a very cool thing. the J in it is a dimarzio ultra jazz. pretty cool!

i dont think i wanna do any routing on the week old bass, that's just scary. but it's actually a really cool idea, maybe for another bass in the future.

i was hoping to find something suitable that would fit without routing

and thanks!
