To make sure that you have proper output, a setup is probably in order. My suggestion, since you don't have experience with it, would be to take your bass to a repair place and have them set it up. They will give the bass neck an adjustment if it needs it (called setting the relief, to get the strings closer/farther from the fretboard and straighten or bow the neck), set the height of the strings at the bridge (setting the action), and adjust the intonation at the bridge (so that each note up and down the neck is as close to in tune as possible). You can also have them set the pickup heights to the stock recommended positions, or have them find a good balance of all the strings.
I'd highly suggest getting this done by someone who knows what they are doing. I tried this myself on my first bass before I knew what I was doing and had to take it in to a shop to fix the horrible setup job that I did.

Thankfully they were able to fix my mistakes, and even taught me how to set up my bass for myself.
