Can I still install new P-ups on my squier P if it hasn't got a tone knob?

Basically, I decided to do a (very) simple mod to my squier standard precision bass (P bass body, J bass neck, PJ P-ups). All I did was move the input from the side of the bass (like on tele) and put it were the tone knob was (the squier used to have 3 knobs, volume for each P-up and master tone, and the tone knob was were the jack would be on a standard P bass). So I now just have 2 controls, A volume for each P-up. I'm kinda happy with it put the P pickup sounds really weak and I want to swap it for something better. Could I still put the new pickups in with the tone knobs

A tone control is nothing more than a capacitor, with a pot to control how much of the signal can pass through it. It won't make any difference to the pickup if you have a tone control or not. Your tone may be a touch brighter without a tone control, however.

Yes any passive P pups (same for J and soapbar pups) will work without a tone control. Your only way to adjust tone without a tone control is by variously blending the neck and bridge pups. Having seperate vol for each pup and no tone control can give better sound variety then just having master volume and a passive tone control in my experiece with guitars. Never owned a two pup bass without seperate volumes or at least volume and blend. But I have replaced a tone control with 2nd volume in some 2 pup guitars that only had master volume and 3way toggle switch for pup selection. Those dont give satisfactory tonal options to me.
