Can one string on a jazz pickup go bad?

Well, new strings seemed to solve this problem, so that teaches me to spend a little more time experimenting before I jump to conclusions.

Yes, I had a Bartolini jazz in a bass I bought from Ebay which had a very weak D response.

Put it back on Ebay openly and honestly with accurate description and it sold for a reasonable price with no comebacks.
