Wondering if anyone has had the actual experience of comapring these, or replacing the AEROS in your Lakland. How did the AEROs sound?

Well I went the other way. I've had Aero's in a J and liked them a lot. I have an Aero PJ set (Type 1's) that I adore. There is an element or 'raw' about them that just sounds old to me. It isn't hot, it's not muddy, it isn't overly bright. To my ear the trype 1's sound like the best of the oldest Fenders I've heard.

I have heard that Aero pickups can be umm, variable - that hasn't been my experience though. The J set I had were pulls from a DJ.

If I were ordering a DJ, I personally would request the Aero's installed rather than the Laklands. I haven't heard the Laklands mind you, but the character of the Aero's is what I'm looking for in a Fender style bass.

Anymore, you cannot get Aeros, or anyhting in a Lakland. Dan and crew have gone "proprietary". As far as my novice ear can tell, the new Landland Skyline JO pups are much more mid heavy then the Nordy set I was used to, In fact, the Nordy's requried me to go heavy on neck pup, while the new JO5 I can actually dial it back some.

I dont know if the tone is more "vintage" and less "modern" than the Nordy's I had, but my ear preferred the Nordy tone. I was hoping Aeros have the same quality about them.

There is alot of tonal variation in the JO5, and I can get the sound right by balancing the pups.

And yes, since Larry makes them custom, there can be some variability unless they're "off the shelf".

I have extensively compared Aeros-Fralins-Laklands. I can say that Lakland pickups sound in between Aeros and Fralins, being somewhat closer to Aeros. I can only hear the difference when the bass is NOT in the mix and I listen through headphones.

How would they compare to Nordstand NJ5's?
