can someone draw me a diagram?

Sign in to disble this ad
I did a search (on TB and Google) and I cant find what I was looking for.

I want to put in a 3 way selector switch on my passive P/J. I want to choose either the P pup , Jazz pup, or blend between them. I have looked at several switches and I am assuming that if I want to go between both pups instead of only one I need something like this:
http://elderly.com/accessories/items/FP2041.htm

verses something with only 3 leads on each side. I would think that would control one or the other but not both.

Im actually not too sure, I have drawn up diagrams myself, and searched high and low but cant find a definite answer.

anyone?
someone draw something up??

Do you WANT a knife-switch? You can get a simple toggle switch that takes up a lot less room that'll do the job perfectly.
http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electron...ctures#details

# 1223 (On/On/On) will do the job. Connect the hot from each PUP to an outer lug, and run the center lug to the volume and tone controls.

John

Substitute a volume spot for the 3 way toggle and you'll have a master volume instead, unless you really need 2 volumes, then you could always move the jack to the side of the bass and put the 3 way in it's place..

i actually found a previous thread stating this.
the jack isnt located on the PG anyway, its below it.
so i have room for a switch with doing a master volume.

i like this idea better anyway.

If you like having two volumes, that's easy, too.

Just wire the switch in after the volumes and before the tone.

Voila!

That's not a knife switch, it's a blade switch.
For obvious reasons, you don't want a knife switch on your bass:

If you need the diagram for VVT plus a 3 way switch, I have this one that covers all three switch types (DPDT On/On/On, Tele style blade and Gibson style toggle.)

this helped a lot. thanks.
Instead of wiring the pickups to the volumes, wire the pickups to the 3 way instead (like in your 3rd post), then from the 3way to the vol to the tone to the jack.

TS, are you looking to have this:

Pickups -> Switch -> Master Volume -> Tone?

Or do you want this:

Pickups -> Separate Volumes -> Switch -> Tone?

i want to switch between pups.
i was thinking master volume and master tone.
switching between them would choose which one the pots control right?

Some times, the best way to do it, is to do it. Just don't get too much "analysis paralysis"

The 3 way you are referring to, will be on/on/on in your case.
You should be alright with the "shortys", the right angle could make the cavity a bit tight.

Center lug will go to the volume, one side.. one pickup, other side...other pickup..

I recall Kramer, Ibanez... wiring some basses like this and a few imports too.

I got it!!! It's close to the "Power jazz bass" wiring, except that it had a "sweepable TBX" (Tone/Bass expander) control, otherwise it was 1 vol, 1 tone and a 3 way.
