Most tuners and amps these days have a mute button on them. Hit the button and unplug.

I believe the mute on G-K and Genz amps mute the DI.

OP, do yourself a favor and buy a $6 or $7 battery tester from Home Depot or the like. When you feel yourself getting nervous about your batteries, especially before a gig, test them. You'll see that they last a very long time, and the tester will let you know when you really do need to replace.

I leave my Carvin in active mode, and I don't think I've had to change the batteries more than once a year.

Ha! Exactly what I've done. And found the amazing battery life.
