Changing Pups in Active Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I want to get a pair of Bartolini BD5CBC for My Dean Edge 5Fretless...they are Soap Bars 100mm x 36mm

The Current Stock pups are active...

Questions:
Can these pups work as Active?

As I am not really an Active fan, can/should I just rewire it to be passive with the new Barts?

Are you sure your Dean has active pickups? It could very well have passive pickups with a battery powered preamp like my old Dean Rhapsody 12.

If it has passive pickups like I suspect, you should be able to simply replace them with the Bartolinis, without need for further changes. However, if the original pickups are actually active, you might have to change the volume pot from 25K to 250K (and maybe the blend pot as well).

Does your bass have active pickups or active electronics?

Very few basses have active pickups. My best guess is that if they are not EMG (tough even the EMG HZ are passive), your pickups are probably passive.

If so, then your bass is called "active" because you have a preamp in it (bass/(mid)/treble) and needs a battery. In that case only the electronics (preamp) are active. The pickups are still passive.

A lot of people confuse active pickups and active electronics.

Wow...I never knew, but you are probably right...here's what the dean website says:

"Soap Bar Pickups with Dean Pre-amp"

Should I consider a Bart pre-amp?

I thought Basses with Batteries were considered active? What gives?

Yes, bass with batteries are considered active. The bass is active, not the pickups.

Any aftermarket preamp would be a great addition if you like the playability and acoustic tone of the instrument. If you like both, then a bart, aguilar, audere, etc preamp would be great.

Yeah you should be just fine replacing the stock pickups with the barts. Be sure the size fit.

Try it with the stock preamp first. If you don't like it, wire the bass passive. Still no cost involved. If finally you don't like either way, then consider getting a preamp.

FWIW, my Dean Rhapsody 12 has a fairly decent sounding EMG manufactured 3-band preamp. If it were me, I would install an active/passive switch and see how much effect the preamp has on the tone, then swap it out for something else if need be. The Aguilar is another option.

This looks like the one: http://www.emginc.com/displayproduct...&catalogid=175
