Changing pups on FBass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello everybody,

I want to know if some of you guys have ever changed pups on your FBass?

It's not I don't like the sound of the stocks but I really consider some pickups with a hotter output.
Also, I'd like to have more fatness especially on the bridge and keep the humcancellable and splittable thing...

Any experience or input is welcome but please, don't tell me I'm a heretic.

Thank you.

FWIW:

No Fbass experience but the process is the same for any bass. Figure out what your options are (what fits the route) then read reviews and gather information on those pups to weed some out and narrow the focus to no more than 3. Take a stab at one of the 3 - you'll know what it sounds like once installed not before.

You might try and wire the pups straight to the jack first - one at a time and check them out compared to using only that respective pup through the harness. Issue may not be in the pups but the harness.

By harness I'm referring to the control layout - passive/active and what it's made of. For example I've noticed a lot of guys complain about MEC's in Warwicks but most of them are satisfied with the pickups when they replace the preamp.

OK, thanks.

The thing is I love the preamp, I played the bass in passive and active mode in other amps and the "problem" is still there.
Not enough ballsy and fat.
I tried to raise the pups at max, the same.

This bass sounds wonderful but she could just be ballsier especially on the bridge pickup which sound a bit thin.

Any ideas?

Could It Be The Strings You're Not Happy With?

What kind of strings have you tried? Thomastik Infeld Jazz flats have satsifed my jones for "the ideal string."

I tried DM Sr2000 strings, DR,
and I'm currently sticking to the stocks Labella Supersteps.
I don't want to put flats on my Fbass, I will on my fretless, though.

I've just read a TB thread where someone was about to send his Fbass pickups to Carey Nordstrand to get them rewired for a hotter output.
I can't manage to find it again to ask the owner if he did or not, so I've just emailed Nordstrand pickups to see if they have a suggestion or already experienced this demand.
