Changing PUs in a Darryl Jones

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a maple neck Darryl Jones 4, Skyline series, I just love it. I love the feel, the neck, the balance, dynamism. But actually the sound is a bit too modern for me. It sounds like a Marcus Miller sig. and I am looking for something more vintage, more mids and less low mids.

What do you suggest if money is not an issue:

original vintage Fender pickups from 70s on ebay,
original 75 RI Fender pickups,
original other Fender pickups (e.g. custom shop 60s into a typical 70s position?)
Lindy Fralin
or another brand

(Or... Joe Osborn?)

I've understood that the Antiquity II from SD are a quite good match to the old 70's pickups, only with higher output.

Actually I had an Antiquity II, was really great, I wonder how this would work here. As far as I can remember it had a real vintage tone, though it was a bit dark. I have put it into a 75RI CIJ jazz bass, but because the bass was too heavy I have sold it soon after.

Lakland said DJ has a 60s position of the bridge pickup... my measurement confirmed it, if I remember correctly...

It must be the nature of the bass and PUps. While a different bass might be an option, I'd consider different strings first.

Then pickups. I liked Nordstrand (NP4), I'd definitely recommend them. Don't know how they'd act in a DJ though...

Lastly, a different bass. Try rosewood for a change? or a JO. I have a rosewood DJ, but if I ever wanted a different jazz bass, I'd try the JO with Fralins. and flats :P

"I am looking for something more vintage, more mids and less low mids."

Last week I put a set of Lollars in my 62RI. They might meet your needs. Very even string to string, less boom on the bottom and rounder smoother top end.

In my brief experience with these pups, this is an accurate representation of their sound:

Lollars are very good. I prefer Vintage Vibe JBX4's because they are quieter but still very much in the vintage camp.
