cheap but nice pickups

I own a cheap brownsville 5 string that feels great to my hands but has a pretty dull sound. I figure there is no use selling it, I wouldn't get any money so I might as well do something to make it sound good.

I was looking at semour duncan bassline jazz pickups. If the outcome to that is nice than i might put a new preamp in it.

I don't want to spend too much money on this, does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm trying to achieve a passive jazzy sound

I think the Semour Duncans would be a good fit.

I'm not sure what you mean by "passive jazzy sound", but dimarzio model j pups are very fine and won't cost lot.
