How do I choose the right pickups when replacing the pickups on my bass?

Tell us a little more about yourself and we'll recommend something.

Type of bass, pickup size (J,P,MM, soapbar), music style you play, type of sound you're after, etc...

It's a MIM Fretless Jazz. I use flatwound strings on it currently, may change to rounds, but doubt it. I play a lot of different music, but mainly rock, jazz, and church music. A Pino tone would be nice. I like my tone/sound to be defined, not muddy. I play mainly fingerstyle on the fretless, but do on occasion slap. What's the big differences between active and passive pickups? I use passive electronics, not active preamps if that makes a difference. Any other info needed?

Check out the Pickups FAQ located at the top of this forum.
There is an abundance of Jazz pickup reviews there.

I replaced my MIJ Jazz pups for Bartolini's. Very pleased with the result.
