Chrome pickguard and shielding?

Sign in to disble this ad
My main P has a chrome pickguard and Fralin pup, and my bass hums at church. If I touch the p/g, it stops, or if I roll the tone down it goes away. We have bad/dirty electrical, and florescent lights. Sounds like a shielding job, right? Well, some places I've read say that the chrome p/g should be a shield. My brother-in-law plays a Les Paul, and it hums also. But his Strat seems to be quiet.

I don't mind shielding the bass, or the guard. But I want results if I put the effort into it, know what I mean? If a humbucking equipped guitar still makes noise, can I expect to see any improvements?

Try grounding the PG to the bridge. Just a thought, though I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV.

This filters out the high end which either removes all of the noise or changes how your mind processes any low frequency noise left over.

You still want shielding...

With ideal shielding you would make it just like you are touching the p/g today.

Thanks David for the link, that was a good read. So, a good shielding should help? Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether the chrome p/g is helping or hurting the situation?
