clarification on active/passive switch

I looked all the way to page ten in the search and I still confused.

I have passive pups and an active preamp, the pups are EMG-40 HZ EPs, and the preamp a B-64EQ.(the bass in question is a ESP LTD C305) It seems I install a bypass, but some people say that I will lose tone controls in passive, does this mean I would lose my balance control as well? And can I just replace one of my tone controls with a push-pull or would i have to drill out a hole?

Thanks in advance and sorry about any confusion, I don't know much about the electronic aspect of the bass.

If i'm correct, unless you have specifically passive tone controls (i've only seen passive treble on an active pre-amp with A/P switch), yes, you will lose the tone controls in passive mode including balance (not volume though). I think that passive mode is supposed to only be used as a backup in a situation where your battery runs out. But, it's also a good option if you want to control everything from your amp.

Well I bought a Birdsong Bbox and it doesn't do much for my tone, but it does change my guitarist's quite a bit. So I wonder if it is becuase of my bass being active.

So would it be like my balance was set equal?
