I saw a vintage Fender Bass everything good on the bass except for the fact that the pickup pole pieces was coated with a build up of dirt or rust or something else . I tried to scrape some of it off with my nail , but it seems deep ,any ideas on how to remove this. It seems like this could effect the way the pickups respond to the strings.
It won't affect the sound. If you must remove it, the best way is to remove the pickup, remove the cover, and use fine(600+) sandpaper against a flat surface. I wouldn't bother.

i used a small wire wheel on my Dremel on the slowest speed, and buffed the pole pieces lightly until the corrosion was gone.. it doesn't take much to do, and they look new.. if that's what you're looking to do..
I can dig where you guys are coming from , if it does'nt affect the sound all is good
using the dremel to polish them for the looks is cool also. I'll have to play it and compare it to another one.
it doesn't make any tonal difference.. it's completely cosmetic.. i have a Robin Freedom II bass, and it has 4 jazz bass pickups in it.. the rusty, corroded poles just didn't look too good.. so, i cleaned them off.. now, they look like new..
