cleaning Rods/Posts in single coils

is it safe to unsrew them from the pickup (allen wrench screw heads) and clean the rust off with CLR? Or would this seriously damage the PU's?

ive unscrewed a few pick ups and then put then back together with fine results. never cleaned them with clr though. i used a steel wool pad and just kinda brushed/scraped the rust away.
