I've looked around and the only manufacturers that make models exactly as I've described are Delano and Bartolini. I mean that definition as literally as possible. I want a bass that can go from some kind of bridge humbucker to modern 60s jazz with the flip of a switch.
Also, thanks for the suggestions in advance but Nordstrand Fat Stacks and other stacked singles aren't what I'm after I'm looking at pickups like the Delano DJC HE 5:
and the Barotlini MM52CBJD3:

-Must be able to split the coils. I want to be able to run it as a straight up jazz pickup.
-Must be available in a 5 string format
-Must have a complementary neck pickup. For the Delano it would be the JC HE 5s and for the Bartolini it would be the CBJD1s
Also, I'd rather not go custom.

Most humbuckers can be split to run in single-coil mode. And most manufacturers make an equivalent J pickup.
Now, if you wanted a quad-coil humbucker that can be split to allow for silent single-coil mode, there are only a handful of those. They are notably Nordstrand, Bartolini, EMG, and Delano, all of whom make an equivalent split-coil jazz pickup.

| | | Well, i use a normal soapbar, and differentiating between the north and south coils, they definitely sound different from eachother. Im not sure if it has to be a double jazz pickup to get the 2 different jazz pickup placements, because im not sure if the pickups were ever placed that far apart (i could be wrong), but still a dam good sound.
Heres mine, which i am talking about
Or, if there is still nothing, just glue 2 good ones together. |

I know dual and qaud coil pickups can be coil split but they are made differently from jazz pups and I want as little difference as possible from a "normal" jazz bass when I switch mine into jazz mode. I'll probably just go with Delano, lol.

Also, I'd rather not go custom. | So whats wrong with just using two jazz pickups? Sand the ears off of one side of each one and gorilla glue them together. The catch is you need a neck-bridge pair to create a humbucker. So you'll need the kind of J pickups that are the same size in both positions. I'd say a stingray pickup is pretty close to what you want too. You may have to dig into it to bring out separate wires for each coil, though. |

| | Owner/Builder Arizona Bass Company Endorsing Artist: Circle K Strings | | Join Date: Aug 2008 Location: Arizona | | | Any 2 coil 4 wire humbucker pickup will do what you are asking. You can split the coils, use only one coil at a time, switch from north coil, to south coil, perralel, series, in phase, out of phase, etc. Also, just about every manufacturer out there makes a Jazz "neck" possition pickup that compliments their Humbucker bridge pickup.
BTW, these types of pickups can be had for anywhere between $20 and $200 each. Depends on how spendy you want to get. Delano and Nordy's probably being the most expensive. You can get a 2 coil 4 wire MM style 5 string P.U. on ebay for about $20. Or you can look up my buddy Jazzyitalian here on TB. I don't know if he has anymore of them. the only problem is that the pole peices are set for 17mm string spacing.
If you are looking for something in a more standard 18.5mm string spacing that won't break you bank, I suggest looking a the new line of pickups from Tesla pickups. They sound great and they won't break your bank.
If you have to have a "double Jazz" look I would go with the one at Basspartsresource that David suggested.
Good luck |

| | | I got one of these on my Warwick "Dirty Blonde". I discovered just a week ago (after three years!!!) it was switchable between dual and single coil by reading a review on the bass... |

X45CBJD-B in the neck
MV52CBJD(3) at the bridge wired for parallel/south/series
Current config:
I moved from a X45K1-B in the neck (hotter and brighter than the "J" series) and a "dual jazz" combo of an X45K1-T and an X45J1-T which was wired north/series/south.
Prior config:
The CBJD's are a nice match to one another whereas the mix of the X45K-B in the neck used to dominate either of the single coils in the bridge position. I now have a better blend. The old X45J1-T in the south-bridge position was more of what I hear in a traditional "jazz" bass. The CBJD series are definitely more open and possibly harsher through the upper mids instead of "burpy".
When I inquired about the Delano setup I was looking at the JSBC5 HE with a MC 5 HE quad coil which was a special order. Brian from BestBassGear indicated "There is not a matching combo, per se, but those two pickups will work fine together."
I hope this helps.

| | Everybody Wang Chung Tonight | | Join Date: Nov 2010 Location: Houston Tx | | I have just simply stuck two jazz bass pickups together and it worked great. I desoldered the wires from one pickup and ran them up through the top. That way I could simply use that pickup upside down so it would be humbucking when used together.

I would rather have two bridge pups to make the humbucker though. And actually, a stingray pup is not what I want. I've had a few basses with a similar configuration and it was not the sound I'm after. Quote:

A regular dual/quad coil pickup won't do it because they are wound differently. The descriptions for the to pickups I posted basically say that they are what I'm looking for. I'm just wondering if there are other options.
At this point I'm pretty sure that I'll be going with the Delano JC HE 5 & DJC HE 5 combo. They seem to have a bit more bite than the Bartolini's in my experience.
GMSweet, that's my plan exactly.
