Coil Tap on a Bongo... would it work?

Sign in to disble this ad
I got one of those new snazzy Bongo basses and I was experimenting with the tonal variety the other day. I was able to dial in a pretty good Jazz Bass sound, but I think with a single-coil I could get a little closer.

I thought about putting a coil tap switch on one or both pickups, but I haven't opened the bass up to see if this would be possible. Does anybody know how many leads the pickups have (2 or 4)? Are these wired in series or parallel from the factory?

Any advise/cautions that I need to hear before I even consider this?

Danksalot!

I don't know how the pickup wiring for the Bongo is, but if it is 4 conductor you could wire it:

volume (with push/pull coil tap) neck pickup
volume (with push/pull coil tap) for the bridge pickup

that would allow individual coil taps

Okay, I opened up the control cavity and there are only two wires from each pickup. Bummer.

A lot of the time, the single coil setting on a humbucking pickup sounds bad anyways in my opinion, (I don't like abreviating).
