Neither one is better. They are different.
Or is there always supposed to be one of everything that is BETTER?

Seriously. I love the beefy tone of my Bongo's fat bridge humbucker, but I also like the snarly sound of my Jazz bass's singles.

I really like single coils on my Jazz bass. Although, if I were using MusicMan basses, I'd probably be using humbuckers.

Coils? Humbuckers have coils too! Or did you mean single coils?

I like pickups that don't hum, regardless. There are some great sounding hum canceling pickups that sound like single coils. And some great clear sounding humbuckers.

I was just thinking about this last night... My StingRay has a single humbucker, my Tobias has two soapbar humbuckers, and my Precision has a humbucking split-coil. Not a single bass that I regularly play has one single-coil pickup. Although, my Ibanez RD707 has a P/J combination, and the J is single. It has the crappiest tone of them all, and stays at home for my daughter to play.

The last time I commented in one of these kind of threads, a few people thought I was being rude, but it needs to be said. These kind of questions are far too vague and subjective to be answered. There are an infinitude of ways in which to engineer pickups. With so many variations, it is impossible to make a comparison without some specific info. It's like asking what's better; red wine or white wine? Red and white refer only to the types of grapes used, yet there are thousands of wildly different varieties of wines that use either type of grape. So what sort of qualities are we looking for?

Agreed. I have Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pickups in my main bass, and they sound great. Really single coil like, but zero hum.

Why don't you just say that directly to me? There is absolutely no use in trying to "sound smart" on the internet. You're surrounded by idiots, but as you as you try to say something intelligent there are going to be people a lot smarter than you watching, and no one has any idea who you are, anyways, for any of it to matter.

I prefer a P/J setup to humbuckers.

Singles for me. Or a P bass. That's a single-coil, sort of, at least in the way it senses the strings. Unless it's an actual non-split P single, in which case it's an actual single coil.
