Combing emg and a passive

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello. I have a thought on pickups.

If choose to make a warmoth bass og upgrade a bass, i'm thinking of putting an emg jazz i neck and a passive jazz in bridge.

The reason is i want that active sound. The Agressiveness from the emg. More mean sounding and butter lows imo. But i want more upper midrange punch i dont think i get with the emg. I also want to get a middleground between active and passive sound.

So my question is if you think it would work good to combine an active and passive pickup. Anyone have tried it and did it sound good?

I meant "combining".

You can't really combine and active pickup with a passive because the output of the active is very low and will load down the passive.

You are better off sticking with two actives or running the passive through a small preamp to make it active.

You will need a buffer to lower the output impedance of the passive, since the EMG has a much lower output impedance.

Can you put a buffer inside a bass?

No, a passive pickup has a higher output impedance. The coils inside EMGs are pretty much the same as passive pickups, such as their HZ line.

But the output of the active pickup is a preamp, and that will interfere with the passive pickup and load it down. So you need a buffer after the passive to make it active and lower its output impedance.

Thanks.

If you put a buffer after the passive, will it then change the sound of the passive?

And do you think its a good or bad idea to blend the sound of an active and passive?

With a buffer on the passive pickup, you will have less loading against the pickup and a more "open," trebley sound.

"Active" and "passive" are not sounds, they refer to whether or not there is an active component in the signal path, in this case to lower the output impedance.
