Combining a Dark Star w/ Fralin Jazz Pup?

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone got any experience with this combo. I'm thinking of adding a Fralin Jazz to my bridge position. I have a Darkstar in the P-Bass position. Probably wired like a Jazz Bass.

I have a set of Fralin P/J's in my Fender Aerodyne and LOVE it!

Thanks!

No experience, but the one set of Fralin J's I've tried were quite low output, and the DS are reputed to be quite hot, and this may be exacerbated by the DS being in the P position where there's more string movement and therefore more output.

re:

Very good point! Were the Lindy J's the stacked humbucker model?

The hot single coil w/ a humbucker has some interesting possibilities.

My Aerodyne Jazz (with the Fralin P/J's) has a 4% underwound P and the stacked J. Wow, none of the phase/volume problems associated with typical P/J sets!
Very throaty, but smooth at the same time!

Thanks for the input!

Single coils. The DS is a single coil too.

Fralin J's won't sound like each other let alone a DS. Not only different models but he'll wire them however you want.

See FAQ Dimento's J (single coil) experiment for my experience and the Fralins and DS I had.

When combining different single coil pickups one should take into account magnetic polarity. I keep saying this over and over again to the many inquiries that I get.
Remember that rw/rp means reverse wind / reverse (magnetic) polarity.
You can fool two different pickups around the reverse winding thing by switching the leads but the magnetic polarity is immutable. In other words you can't have two single coil pickups in hum-canceling mode when their magnetic polarity is the same. You can however use them in parallel or series without being rw/rp but they won't be hum-canceling...BUT they might sound pretty damn good if you don't have the hum problems that can be found in "dirty" environments - bad house wiring etc.
It's always a good idea to shield the cavities regardless of weather the pickups are single coil rw/rp, not rw/rp or buckers or even one pickup alone.
