Complete electronics package

I think I'm going to do a project on my squier jazz, since I'm now playing an MIA. The frets and neck are fine, it's relatively well balanced for a cheap body wood, and it's in the cool 'vintage' red burst color. On the other hand, the pots scratch, the jack is a little loose, and the pickups don't have much high or low.

Is there anyone that sells a complete electronics package? Suggestions on brand? I like the looks of the j-retro, but I really can't afford a $300 unit plus the cost of pickups (which will probably be model J's since I'm on a budget). I'm guessing passive parts are cheaper than just about any preamp; would it be unreasonable to expect to get it all for $100 (plus pickups)?

Depends on whether you're talking new or used. New, pups and pre no way. Pups and passive pots close. Used pups and pre maybe for two band.

Barts and Aggies are the norm for pre's.

You might be able to just spray the pots and tighten the jack and check pups out passive first, get a pre later.

Hmm, according to bass parts resource...

VINTAGE STYLE WIRING KIT FOR J BASS
Item #WKJ-VNT $18.79 USD
GENUINE FENDER ORIGINAL BASS BRIDGE
Item #099-0804-100 $34.79 USD
GENUINE FENDER PLAIN CHROME NECKPLATE
Item #099-1447-100 $8.79 USD
3PLY TORTOISE JAZZ BASS PICKGUARD
Item #PG 0755-044 $29.79 USD

I think I have a handle on a set of 60s custom shop pups for about a hundred, add 20 bucks for a 60s decal and some shielding and I could do the whole setup for a tad over 200. It'd still be a squier, but if I could get the 60s RI vibe, it'd be a good reason to keep the first bass.

One more q, this gets out of the electronics area, but should I go with the classic bridge or get one with grooves?

As you're on a budget, buy some preloved DM J's, and an Aguilar OBP pre with loom from bestbassgear and wire it in.
