completely rewiring my bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought a used jazz bass yesterday and the electronics need to be changed. The neck pickup doesn't work and as I tried to see what the problem was the output jack came loose from the wire. I want to change everything, but I'm having trouble figuring out all the parts I need. I want to put quarter pounders in it, if it makes any difference. I don't know what kind of pots i need.

Also, could I get a quick review about quarter pounders? I did some searches, but I can't find anything regarding slap. I play a bit of slap, are quarter pounders decent for that?

See the Seymour Duncan support page for wiring diagrams. It lists diagrams and specs for several jbass options. http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/

How about repairing the existing wiring (if it's that that's the problem) and seeing if you're happy with it before you go spending money on new pickups? Am speaking from experience, I had all these plans to mod a Precision I bought recently, but found after playing it for a few days that it was perfect as standard.

If you're set on Quarter Pounders, they tend to be mid-scooped (there's a tone chart here, scroll down a bit for the bass pickups). Usually Quarter Pounders are bought by the punk rock/metal crowd (including myself). If you wanted something more all-round, maybe the SJB-1 or SJB-2? There's plenty more suggestions for J pickups if you do a search.

Go all Sadowsky, pups and pots. Small investment-big sound.

Do Sadowsky pots sound better than standard CTS?

My personal choice at the moment is Bassline Pickups, vintage wire, CTS pots and Sprague Orange Drop Capacitors.
