Confusion over series/parallel switch....

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a slight confusion about this...

I can sort of understand how to hook it all up and such, BUT, I dunno if I'm replacing one of my v/v/t pots, or adding a pot to make it v/v/t/switch.....

I know there has to be a relatively easy answer, I've obtained a diagram or two from stward mac and other sites that I'm too lazy to link currently.

The two basses I'll be doin' this on is my olp mm3 and my sx jazz, which both currently have a v/v/t. So, am I replacing one of the volume knobs w/ a switch, or adding the switch to my current setup?

thanks for the help, just tryin to get some better sounds out of my already great axes!

Your adding a switch, your basses will remain V/V/T.

I've done entirely too much web-browing into this subject...

So I don't have to drill an additional hole, (at least for the jazz), I'm going to go ahead and get a push/pull pot. I would just like to know for a j-bass stock v/v/t config, how would I be able to insert a push/pull pot in place of one of the v knobs and still have it adjust volume when in stock (parallel) configuration. I know for a fact the procedure will be pretty much the exact same thing in my olp (same control and setup, just a humbucker), I just need to know which wire goes where on the push/pull pot.

I know this subject gets beat to death, but this usually becomes the main question. Any help is highly appreciated!

Keep in mind that the push-pull pot is a dual device - both a switch (push/pull the knob), and a pot (rotate the knob). The two are electrically independent; the only thing they have in common is the shaft.

The idea is to swap out one of the pots in your bass with an identical pot, which functions exactly the same way - one that just happens to have a DPDT switch riding "piggy-back", so you don't have to drill a new hole for a switch in a separate housing.

Installation is basically a two-step process: 1) de-solder the pot that's currently in your bass, and solder in the "pot section" of the new device exactly the same way (stop and test here, and your bass should be unchanged from original), then 2) wire up the DPDT switch section as described in the thread joeyl linked to above.
