Confusion with star grounding

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

I'm going to rewire a Jazz (2 pups) type of bass and was going to use the method of attaching a ground wire via a screw to the copper foil, then running it to the ground of the output jack.

If I understand correctly, I run wires from the right (ground) lug of the pots to the main ground wire.

Questions: Are the right lugs supposed to be soldered to the top of the pot also?

And do I solder the capacitor from the right pot lug to the universal ground wire, or to the top of the pot?

Regards,

Mike

Stay off the Pot

With star grounding on a Jazz, nothing at all should be soldered to the body of any of the pots. You can use a ring terminal under a pot shaft, or a lug near the output jack. The main point is for everthing to have it's own individual path to ground. Both pu's should have separate ground all the way to the central ground, the vol and tone pots should have their own separate paths also( including the cap), and the shielding(includes bridge ground, shielding tape or paint, and pick guard count as one unit) should have it's own ground. Sounds like a lot of rdeundant wiring, but it helps.
