Considering pulling the preamp out of my J bass

I have a parts bass with an unidentified 9 volt preamp and Smith pickups. I love the sound, but hate the hiss. Last Sunday, they had me hot in the house and monitors and during quiet parts I could hear the hiss. I had to run the tone all the way down to get rid of it. I am thinking about getting a Bayou Cables harness and making it passive.

I'm thinking of doing likewise. I have a MIM active J with the preamp and "Vintage Noiseless" pickups. While I like the playability of the neck, the tone is a bit "sterile" for my liking. If you find a set of PUs you really like, report back.

Check out the Rothstein JX5 passive wiring harness. I have one in my frankenjazz and gives me a variety of sounds that I don't get with a standard Jazz wiring harness.
