Those factory caps are probably 0.05uF+/- 5% judging by the code you provided.

The pot you put in the tone control position will have the capacitor soldered to it. That capacitor is what makes it the tone control.

Tone knob either on or off. on with no change in tone, when turned fully clockwise then turns sound off. fitted with Sprague 'Orange Drop' 0.047 Capacitor

Did you solder the legs to the right lugs?

Ok re checked cap's leg's, too long in middle leg and touching pot. Trimmed now ok.

better tones and I think a bit louder, now what else to do with this vm.
Change the duncan design pickups I think they are pb101's for quarter pounders
Swap the bridge for a Gotoh 201

I have owned a lot of Jazz Basses including some Am Std's and I really dig this bass including the pickups. The only thing I would consider changing are the tuners as they are not very smooth but I am nitpicking. The sound is very punchy and balanced with the right amount of growl. I bought it as a beater but find myself grabbing it all the time.
